EFF "Net Information & Resources" Archive

http://www.eff.org/pub/Net_info/
Last Updated Thu Mar 13 10:42:56 PDT 2003

The intent of this directory was to provide recent information resources to help the network novice become familiar with the Internet, including its associated networks, resources, and protocols. When the Internet was young there was a big need for the following information. Now there are many groups who do the same job and EFF has moved on to other things. Most of the following information remains for historical purposes.

EFF_Net_Guide/
directory housing EFF's Guide to the Internet - all you need to get started with IRC, ftp, email, gopher, Usenet, you name it. It's all here. If you're having trouble with FTP, try sending any message to netguide@eff.org, and the guide will be automatically mailed to you. This directory contains many versions (most in the Other_versions subdiretory) - the one you probably want right now, the plain text one, is netguide.eff in /pub/Net_info/EFF_Net_Guide/
Guidebooks/
directory of misc guidebooks on networking, from Zen and the Art of Internet to Hitchhiker's Guide to Internet, and more. A good place to continue after EFF_Net_Guide.
Introductory/
See Net_culture/
Misc/
Resources/
directory containing misc resource pointers (ftp site lists, lists of net access providers, lists of CMC and social resources, lists of mailing lists and newsgroups, etc.)
Technical/
docs on technical aspects of networking and comms, incl. general FAQs about internet technology (TCP/IP, ftp, etc.) If it's the sort of thing you'd ask your admin about (and probably be told "RTFM!"), this is the place to look. If you're after very basic intros to the net, or looking for socially-oriented FAQs (netiquette, etc.) Look in /pub/Net_info/Net_Culture/ and /pub/Net_info/Guidebooks/ (and you may find EFF's Guide to the Internet in /pub/Net_info/EFF_Net_Guide/ to be of particular interest).
Tools/
directory containing misc networking-related tools, including compression software, cryptographic items, net searching tools, etc. By no means exhaustive, but a good place to start. Most FAQs and other documents will be found either in the compressed archives, or in the /pub/Net_info/Technical/ directory. An exception is PGP- and crypto- related FAQs and other docs, which are located in /pub/Net_info/Tools/Crypto/ and apropos subdirectories thereof.
