Data mining technologies are constantly evolving and they have a variety of uses for counter-terrorism analysis. Unfortunately, popular portrayals of data mining technologies labor under several misperceptions — that a single massive database is necessary, that existing data mining solutions can be imported to counter-terrorism, and that automatic programs will replace human analysts. All are false.

We are still at a very early stage of research with respect to data mining for counter-terrorism. We need several more years before we will have uncovered the key opportunities for analyzing relational data. Even then, I am certain it will be many more years before we have exhausted all the technical opportunities of this research area. Fortunately, there are several strong, though relatively small, research programs currently underway.
