| A frequent theme in assessments of the technical capabilities of the U.S. intelligence community is how the volume of available data is increasing much faster than the analytical resources to analyze the data. This was noted prior to the September 11th attacks, and nearly all assessments since then have noted this issue prominently. For example, the National Academies' report Making the Nation Safer: The Role of Science and Technology in Countering Terrorism, quoted in this slide, hits two of the high points: 1) the volume of available data is enormous; and 2) the relevant records are often hidden within vast amounts of irrelevant data.
