Re MORRY TAYLOR FOR PRESIDENT Brian Cunningham, the National Political Director for the Taylor for President Campaign, call on Wednesday, Jan. 24th, and stated that Taylor wished to participate in the proposed online presidential debates. Upon my request, he promptly followed this up with a fax on the campaign's letterhead stationary, signed by him, stating, "This letter is to notify you that Morry Taylor is willing to participate in your Internet debate as laid out if the needed number of candidates agree to participate." [see next item for the number-of-participants requirement and proposed schedule] === Re BOB DORNAN FOR PRESIDENT Also on Jan. 24th, Campaign Manager Terri Cobban for the Dornan for President Campaign called and said that Bob Dornan would be willing to participate, "absolutely!" I have requested written confirmation of this by fax. She also provided contact information for the Dornan for President camapign, updating information in earlier GovAccess issues: Dornan for President Campaign Headquarters 6320 Augusta #1101 Springfield VA 22150 703-644-2600; fax/703-644-5117 http://4dornan.com <== this is a change from previous information 74157.664@compuserve.com Terri Cobban, Campaign Mgr Mark Dornan, Press Secy Rachael Krausman, Electronic Media Coord'r [74157.664@compuserve.com] &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& [Repeat] Conditions for Conducting the First-Ever Online Presidential Debate [excerpts from the proposal, already faxed to candidates listed in next item] This debate WILL occur if four or more candidates agree to participate, at least one of whom is Alexander, Buchanan, Dole, Forbes, Gramm or Lugar (needed for publicity value; as the better-recognized candidates at this time). Although the time for the detate will be determined by the participating candidates, I suggest that the debate begin on Feb. 5th and conclude on Feb. 11th (Iowa caucuses). And, since scheduling is not an issue and time consumption really can be quite small, then it WILL occur on that schedule if the minimum number of candidates agree. &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& HELP! Have YOU Faxed the Campaign Managers, Supporting Online Prexy Debates? The only way this is going to happen is if the campaigns' organizers feel there is public interest in online presidential debates -- and that they will receive significant publicity from participating (or from avoiding them :-). Please -- 1. Urge the editor of your regional newspaper to cover them, "if the offer substantive content stated as being from the candidates, themselves." 2. Urge the candidates' campaign managers to agree to participate in the online debates -- as has already been proposed to them (and to their press secretaries), in detail, in earlier faxes ... at least, if their candidates wish to be seen as competent to lead the nation into the "Information Age" and the 21st Century. And I think you're right to start off with the Repubs. Frankly, I think televised debates are boring. They are so canned. A Net/Web debate could be a lot more robust, depending on how it is constructed. I like the way Project Vote Smart puts it: It's time to check up on the hired help! The thing that concerns me is that all I have seen about distributing the debates has been by WWW. Many of us are WWW-"challenged", and would appreciate it if the debate was also distributed by mail list. Is this also in the plan, did I just miss it? [I have in mind to set up a listserv for those who wish to receive the debate postings by email, and possibly a Usenet newsgroup to which the candidates' postings will be *incidentally* posted. The listserv will be moderated to allow only the candidates messages to be transmitted (not for general public commentary; someone *else* is free to set *that* up! :-). Using newsgroups *does* pose the problem that they are insecure against forgeries and message cancellations -- still cogitating on that one. --jim] &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& HTTP and MAILTO Links for a "prexy" GovAccess Issue(s?) You're going about it exactly right! I.E.: 1. Publish a first draft, well thought out, but admittedly imperfect, and solicit comments. 2. Incorporate the ideas of others. 3. Continue until the project is as good as the best collective thinking can make it. [Thanks for the kind words. There is *much* more that could be done, if there were more time -- and "staff." (This is entirely a pro bono one-person effort.) If we can establish the precedent, with our current "targets of opportunity," then later organizers can create much more robust online debate mechanisms. But ya gotta start somewhere. :-) --jim] GovAccess.245 shows that the net makes this process effective in days rather than weeks or months. I hope that we (the internet community) can attract enough attention so that this debate can't be ignored by the candidates or main stream press. [The responses, to date, make it apparent that, at the least, the *press* is interested in covering substantive online debates by the candidates. Now we and the press must continue to push the campaign managers to *do* it! FAX NOW! --jim] &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& Minnesota's E-Democracy to Run Online Senate Debates -- Again!
