Prentiss Riddle wrriddle@rice.eduites: I have received a reply from Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) to a letter I had sent to her e-mail address (senator@hutchison.senate.gov) on March 6th. Here is her reply in full: Senator Hutchison wrote: March 10, 1995 Dear Mr. Riddle: Thank you for contacting me regarding the Communications Decency Act of 1995 (S.314). I appreciate hearing from you. Because of rapid advances in technology, the communications industry is paving the way for development of a national "information superhighway," which has the potential to significantly improve our international competitiveness and our quality of life. The Communications Decency Act of 1995 was introduced by Senator Exon to protect the public from the misuse of the telecommunications network and telecommunications devices and facilities. This is a laudable goal, however, it must be balanced with the first amendment and the requests of the rights to privacy. As a member of the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, I plan to review this and all telecommunication legislation carefully to ensure that it takes into account these important considerations. I value your input on this matter and hope that you will not hesitate to contact me about this or any other issues that concern you. Sincerely, Kay Bailey Hutchison
