"If you have certain values you don't want them to be neglected," says the secretary-general of Egypt's Labor Party. Ahmed Omar Hashem, dean of al-Azhar University, told the newspaper that the moves are being considered as ways to counter extremist religious views among youths. Hashem said government-run TV stations were already trying to ``confront the cultural and intellectual invasion from abroad'' and called on all countries that ``broadcast immoral programs'' to develope a common code of ethics. Clergy in the region have expressed great concern about Western TV and films that satellite dishes increasingly deliver to Middle East families. Al-Azhar's relatively liberal leader, Grand Imam Mohamed Sayyed Tantawy, has pushed reform and modernization since taking office earlier this year.
