There is some corroboration of Rimm's data. In February of this year, the Associated Press reported the findings of Mats Wiklund, a researcher at Stockholm University's Institute of Computer and System Science. During a seven-day period in late December and early January, Wiklund counted 5,651 messages or postings about child pornography in four bulletin boards on the Usenet. The postings included about 800 graphic pictures of adolescents engaged in sexual acts. Wiklund said at least eight pictures showed young children, possible ages 8 to 10. Furthermore, Wiklund surveyed only half the bulletin boards dedicated to pornography and most of the offerings he saw were free. There should be no doubt that Wiklund's data on child porn are a minuscule percentage of the total files available on the Usenet. But where I come from, 5,600 messages about child pornography are 5,600 too many. -- Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Sunday 30-Jul-95, p.E3 Letter to the Editor signed Dorn Checkley / Highland Park Director, Pittsburgh Coalition Against Pornography Subj: Notes from the Hinterland Date: 95-10-29 17:57:35 EST From: Stamm44 To: JCASTRO,RPTime,PhilipED CC: DaveGin At the 8 AM mass at a Catholic Church in Somerset,PA., where we were visiting, the ushers were handing out a pamphlet and a white ribbon to everyone entering the church. The pamphlet was pretty simple, a one pager (two sides) from the Pittsburgh Coalition against Pornography, on the occasion of National Pornography Awareness Week. (Curious choice of a name for the week, but, hey...) You are supposed to tie the white ribbon to the car antenna to show that you are in favor of decency and against pornography. The purpose is to tell the community how you feel about (quoting from the pamphlet) "cyberporn, Calvin Klein's kiddie porn ads, adult bookstores, cableporn, Disney's NC-17 movies, and Time-Warner's violent rock and rap music." The Pittsburgh coalition's phone numner is 412-281-4565. I am sure that they have more pamphlets and ribbons available. (G)
