McCullagh" To: Fight Censorship Mailing List Subject: Memo to Anti-Porn Groups Cc: Status: RO X-Status: Mike located this memo, which was written just days after TIME covered CMU's Freedom in Cyberspace rally. Marty's study was accepted by the Georgetown Law Journal about the same time. The author of the memo, Deen Kaplan, works for and with a number of anti-porn groups. At the time of its writing, he was also on the staff of the Georgetown Law Journal, and was shopping Marty's study around the offices. I believe Kaplan also appeared on the same Nightline show that featured Marty, Mike, and Erwin Steinberg. As for the people who received the memo: Dee Jepsen, I believe, is a grandmotherly sort from Enough is Enough. Donna Rice-Hughes is Enough is Enough's communications director and met with Bob Dole a couple times this summer. John McMickle, former conservative activist, is a member of Sen. Grassley's staff who helped to recruit witnesses in time for the July cyberporn hearings. (Bob and Jim, are you keeping up with this? Can you link affiliations with any names?) One interesting hypothesis, which Erwin Steinberg denied when I approached him a few days ago, is that CMU first contacted the anti-porn groups last October. Were they tipped off early to the benefits of Marty's study? -Declan PS: Finally, note that Kaplan's memo calls Usenet newsgroups "boards." Where have we heard that before? (Hint: Only at CMU are newsgroups are called "bulletin boards.") --- Note for Donna Rice-Hughes From: Deen Kaplan Date: Tue, Nov 22, 1994 1:43 PM Subject: Alt.sex.pedophilia To: Cathy Cleaver; Dee Jepson; Dianna Denney; Dixie Sanner; Donna Rice-Hughes; Jan LaRue/Lillian; John McMickle; Lori Fender; Maryam Kubasek; Monique/Ginny/Stacy; Paul Maurer; Rick Schatz Here's an anonymous message posted last night on the Usenet Board Alt.sex.pedophilia. REALLY sick and a good example (even if the person is kidding, which is unlikely in this area.). I'll do a demo of how the USENET boards work in the office for D.C. people after Thanksgiving. ---------------------------- Receiving information ... 1. I love sucking on their tiny finger-sized cocks and probing their tight holes. Their slender little bodies are completely smooth. They're going to die pretty soon so they won't come back to me several years from now as hairy grown up men blaming me for why they are all mentally messed up. And since they are orphans with no one to look over them except for overworked staff, I could get away with just about anything. ------------------------------ To find out more about the anon service, send mail to help@anon.penet.fi. "Grandmotherly" Dee Jepsen is Chairman of the Board of Regents of Pat Roberson's Regent University, is Cochair of Washington For Jesus, and was formerly on the Steering Committee of the Coalition on Revival, closely linked with the Christian Reconstructionist movement. Reconstructionists believe that Christians should "take dominion" and establish Old Testament law. Many Reconstructionists openly advocate death for homosexuals, preferably by stoning. Jepsen may be somebody's grandmother, but I'm glad she's not mine.
