EFF Asks Court to Lift Injunction on Speech
On June 14, EFF's DVD Defense Team filed a brief in support of its
request
to lift the injunction against media site 2600.com for posting DeCSS. The
Defense also opposed the movie studio's request to
expand the injunction to ban linking to Web sites that post the
computer
code that enables people to play DVDs on unsanctioned players.
"Despite months of investigation and the continued presence and
visibility
of DeCSS on the Internet, [the studios] have not discovered a single
instance
of piracy or copying related to DeCSS," EFF's lead
litigator in NY, Martin Garbus, stated in the brief. Federal
District Court Judge Lewis Kaplan is expected to rule on the issue as early
as next week.
