Recently, a number of IUB accountholders have asked to run servers on UCS resources. The "Computer Users' Privileges and Responsibilities" document does not specifically address the issue of servers. Therefore, an interpretation of the policy document is required. For this purpose, a server is defined as a process that communicates through a network, providing a service to one or more individuals other than the account holder. Interpretation of Policy As long as resources permit, any IUB account holder may maintain and be solely responsible for a registered server. Servers that do not serve the instructional, service, and research missions of the University will not be allowed. Student accountholders must secure the signature of a IUB faculty member who has agreed to sponsor the service. Servers may be terminated by UCS system administrators if system integrity is threatened or use of the service results in a degradation of ***network resources on the Bloomington campus, Indiana University network, international Internet***, central system and/or public cluster services. Every effort will be made to provide advance notification of termination. All servers, including those residing on personally-owned hardware, fall under the jurisdiction of existing University policies, i.e. Student Code of Ethics, etc., and IUB network policies. Procedure The server must be registered at the UCS Support Center, IMU, and a registration application completed. UCS staff will review the completed registration application and assess resource utilization and appropriate use issues. The application may be denied if the review process determines that inadequate resources exist to support the server in the environment specified. Applications for servers installed in UCS public computing clusters have a low probability of approval because general host stability cannot be assured. Registration must be renewed annually. Even after an application is approved, the content and administration of the server remains the sole responsibility of the owner, not UCS. _____________________________________________ draft Registration Application: Servers Account Owner: __________________ Account Name: __________________ Faculty Sponsor: _________________________ Sponsor Signature: IP Number: ___________________ Purpose of server: Machine(s) the server will run on: Estimated impact of the server on the machine's resources: Estimated impact of the server on network resources: UCS disclaimer: The above account holder is solely responsible for the content and performance of the server.
