Date: Wed, 26 Oct 1994 21:44:59 -0700 From: Jim Warren Subject: GovAccess.085: debates; misteaks; MN e-democ; SF democ; free speech VAE-KAE-SHION EXPECTED I won't have you to kick around anymore - at least not for the next week or two ... if all goes well. I have the delusion that ah'm takin' off for Puget Sound et al with a most-friendly friend. I mean, actually *leaving* the keyboard! (Well, I *am* secreting a PowerBook an' a gigabyte drive under the maps and flannel shirts in case I need a fix on the road, but that hardly counts.) They tell me this kind of behavior is called a vae-kae-shion - hope to learn how to spell it as well as perform it. So anyway, all bets are off for timely email replies or further GovExcesses in the next week or two. Maybe. (And just as I was getting caught up.) --jim ------------------------------ A GOPHER LIST OF CAMPAIGN DEBATE SCHEDULES From: Jeff Chan Wed Oct 19 00:24:54 1994 [In a recent GovAccess, I echoed a query I'd received asking if anyone knew of online/timely lists of campaign debate schedules. Jeff does. --jim] Actually one of the best distribution mechanisms for televised debates, C-SPAN, has schedules available by gopher. See my recent note below to libernet@dartmouth.edu (a national libertarian mailing list, mailto://majordomo@dartmouth.edu). Note that C-SPAN is 100% privately funded by the cable companies. If the government ran it, it would $&*& ^*&(*. === Date: Mon, 17 Oct 1994 18:36:48 -0700 From: Jeff Chan Subject: CSPAN Schedules are on line To: libernet@Dartmouth.EDU >From: Tom Isenberg >Attention those of you who have access to CompuServe and America >Online, we need you to monitor the online C-SPAN schedule daily to >alert us of debate broadcasts that are likely to include Libertarians. >Sorry, I don't know the details on how to access it. You don't need AOL to get CSPAN schedules. They are available over tthe Internet using gopher. Here's an entry from my firearms.faq (there is a WWW version of faq; see .signature for faq access info) === > c-span.org > C-SPAN schedules, logs, etc. > >C-SPAN (Cable-Satellite Public Affairs Network) broadcasts stuff >going on in the U.S. Congress. It should be available over your >cable-TV network. Schedules are updated daily. So the WWW URL would be: gopher://c-span.org ... > C-SPAN welcomes comments and suggestions from viewers. "PAULA" IS ACTUALLY PAMELA [SAMUELSON] Senility strikes early: It was *Pamela* Samuelson - not "Paula" Samuelson - who wrote the NII critical critique ref'ed in earlier GovExcesses. And she's at the University of Pittsburgh Law School - probably in Pittsburgh. --jim 2. I MISREPRESENTED A SAMUELSON *SUPPORT* COMMENT >From kr@shell.portal.com Wed Oct 19 01:31:42 1994 (Markus Krummenacker) Jim, you put my remark under the label: >AN OPPOSING VIEW ON SAMUELSON'S NII CRITIQUE >From: kr@shell.portal.com Sun Oct 16 18:30:34 1994 I believe this [caption] is not very accurate, as I actually did not intend to critize Samuelson, but on the contrary wanted to strengthen the point of HOW BAD the situation really is. :-) 3. CLARIFICATION RE "TIMELY" USENET ACCESS TO GOVACCESS ACTION-ALERTS In GovAccess.084, I noted: > ... GovAccess is now being gatewayed onto the Usenet News group > comp.org.cpsr.talk by Al Whaley. Very helpful! - but keep in mind that > it may not give your timely "action alerts" for highly-time-sensitive > legislative votes. --jim Well, *I* knew what I wanted to say; shame I didn't say it ... clearly: If you switch from having GovAccess inflicted on you by email, to the convenience of perusing it when you wish in the CPSR-talk newsgroup (along with other CPSR traffic), you might or might not receive and notice its irregular action-alerts that are sometimes highly-time-sensitive, in time to take effective action. *IF* you read the newsgroup as often as you read your email, then you'll get the alerts almost as fast as you would by email. But, *IF* you dast give preference to your email more'n that ever-so-valuable newsgroup, they ya might not see an action alert until after action's useful. My sincere apologies - to Pamela, kr, Al & my amazingly-patient readers. -jim ------------------------------ MORE ABOUT THE MINNESOTA E-DEMOCRACY PROJECT From: Steven L. The Minnesota E-Democracy project invites you to explore our updated campaign and election information server on the Internet and to join our interactive election and public policy electronic mail forum. This citizen organized project has combined the an interactive forum with retrievable election information. This combination has been key to its success. It has built a foundation electronic citizen participation and discussion of important issues. The new Twin Cities Free-Net is the host of the Internet server and the Minnesota Regional Network (MRNet) has donated the e-list facilities. The project has collected position papers from candidates for Governor and U.S. Senate, the voter registration and constitutional amendment information from the Secretary of State, candidate profiles from the StarTribune newspaper, and many other election oriented documents in electronic form. In near future we will be adding the text of the voter guide produced by the Minnesota League of Women's Voters. This on-line effort was launched only a few weeks before the September primary election and is one of only a handful multi-candidate, state-level projects of it kind. The E-Democracy Internet server is filled with content and the Minnesota Politics and Public Policy E-mail Forum (MN-POLITICS) has around 300 subscribers - close to three times more than any other state-based public affairs electronic mail list. The forum is also archived on the server, so you need not subscribe to the list to follow the interesting debate. Project volunteers are now working to hold the first e-mail debate between candidates for the U.S. Senate and Governor in Minnesota. If it can be pulled off, it will probably be the first on-line e-debate between campaigns at that level. At a minimum side-by-side issue papers will be presented on a some key topics over the course of a few days for each race. ...
