Online Activist &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& RESOURCE LIST FOR ONLINE ACTIVISM >From mech@eff.org Fri Sep 16 14:30:27 1994 From: Stanton McCandlish To: ... <*many* lists> Online Activism Resource List 2.09 An EFF FAQ by Stanton McCandlish Updated: 09/16/94 Archived at: ftp.eff.org, /pub/EFF/Issues/Activism/activ_resource.faq A list of Usenet newsgroups, Internet mailing lists and other resources of use to the online activist. Includes activism forums, and topical forums (computing futures, access to govt. info, privacy and censorship, regional politics, NII/GII/"Data Superhighway" issues, virtual community, civil liberties & human rights, etc.) The list focuses on 1) activism about online issues like those topics mentioned above, and 2) general activism strategies and tools available online. The listing of all activism issues (e.g. [non-]smokers' rights, environmentalism, gun ownership/regulation, etc.) and partisan politics specifics, is outside the scope of this list. See also /pub/EFF/Issues/Activism/activ_groups.faq, the Online Activism Organizations List. NOTE: This resource list is in "larval" stage, and should be expanded greatly at some point. A new maintainer for this FAQ is needed. Let mech@eff.org know if interested. IMPORTANT: subscribe commands and the like, when given in quotes mean "type this command, but without the quotes." Example: Subscribe: listserv@eff.org, message body: "subscribe effector-online" means to send an Internet email message to listserv@eff.org, with a message body consisting of the single line: subscribe effector-online without the "quotes". Gopher resources are, when possible, pointed to with full paths, rather than menu names. If you gopher client cannot handle path (directory names), please ask the producers of this software to add support for paths, and URLs, in their next version. Online Activist &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& REGARDING POSSIBLE TELECO MONOPOLIES - A MESSAGE FROM KIM X. [Public Utilities Commission policies appears to be a *very* neglected area of online citizen activism. --jim] The telcos are cleaning up on internet access and fax, etc. Business is up incredably. Pac Bel thinks it can fool the public and the PUC with this new twist to make more money. Calls take LESS time than ever to set up, because more people (and fax machines, etc) use touch tone and automatic dialers. It is the "Register- Senders" in the local CO that are costly, and these are on line only while dialing. The phone companies shoot themselves in the foot. Again. They are supposed to take touch tones at 10 per second, but most phone equipment runs at 3 tones per second. I have had to slow down my dialers because our local office cannot handle 3 tones per second reliably. This is a common problem. If they would meet their own specs, and encourage people to use dialers, then call set-up costs could plummet! If the phone companies would deliver service, instead of noise, then people would gladly pay. They killed Caller ID on purpose so they could offer 1/10 the service for 10 times the price. With caller ID, when you get a busy signal, the called party would get a delayed message that xxx-yyyy called. This would be a nice service and then the phone company could then CHARGE for a call that reaches a busy signal. If they would admit their own mistakes, and credit you when they cannot get a call to go through, then they could also charge for wrong numbers. The phone companies whine constantly about all the free services they provide, but they consistently refuse to provide services that people want and will pay for. The ONLY HOPE is local competition. PS: I have a lot of contacts on the inside. I know whereof I speak. &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& A straight line may be the shortest distance between two points, but it is by no means the most interesting. --Dr. Who [via $WW090@YJ0030.REMNET.AB.COM] Mo' as it Is. --jim GovAccess is a series of postings and a distribution-list maintained by Jim Warren, columnist for MicroTimes, Government Technology, BoardWatch, etc. 345 Swett Rd., Woodside CA 94062; voice/415-851-7075; fax/415-851-2814 jwarren@well.com -or- jwarren@autodesk.com >> Permission herewith granted for unlimited reposting and recirculation.<< >> Past postings are at ftp.cpsr.org:/cpsr/states/california/govaccess << >> To add or drop the GovAccess list, email to jwarren@well.com . <<
