Subject: Vote on S1068: Mon. Sept.26 To New Jersey Free Legislative Access Via Internet Supporters: Attached is a piece of email I received today from a member of the New Jersey Law Library Association alerting people to the scheduled vote on S1068. The message was also posted to several ru and nj newsgroups. It seems we did not have much time to organize or publicize the bill. It is not too late however to telephone a member of the State Senate Government Committee to voice your support. Tomorrow morning I should be able to confirm the Monday date and place of the State Senate Government Committee's meeting. In a conversation I had with the secretary of the committee the public will be able to make remarks before the committee. Perhaps I will see you in Trenton on Monday. Someone indicated an interest in comparing S1068 to the California bill on which it was reportedly modelled. The text of AB1624 will follow separately. Subject: N.J.Legis.Info.for Net-ALERT Message-Id: NEW JERSEY LEGISLATIVE INFORMATION FOR THE INTERNET BULLETIN NO. 5 September 20, 1994 According to the front-page article in yesterday's Star-Ledger, the Senate State Government Committee will vote on S.1068 this coming Monday, Sept.26. This is the bill endorsed by the N.J.Law Librarians Association, to make New Jersey statutes and bills available on the Internet without user fees. As of this morning, official confirmation of the Sept.26 schedule has not yet been released. Nevertheless, I suggest that this is the time for letters and phone calls to Senator Bubba, the committee chair, and to other members of the committee (listed below). The N.J.Law Librarians Association has recommended the deletion of subsections (d) and (e) from section 1 of the introduced version of the bill. These subsections, concerning the fee-based service operated by OLS, are not essential to the bill. It is assumed that without them OLS can still operate the dial-up fee-based service without specific legislative authority, as presently. The essence of the bill is that the statutes, legislative bills, and legislative calendars and directories will be made available through the Internet without user charges. These are the tools of democracy, and access to them in their most current form should not depend upon ability to pay. Hon. Joseph L. Introduction to the MassNet/SmartState Initiative EXECUTIVE SUMMARY * The Age of the Network is dawning: In our emerging information society, the ability to network effectively both with people and with machines is becoming a critical prerequisite for success. * Individuals, organizations, and governments must evolve to survive in an information economy. But it is not enough to just adopt new technologies. We must also create the complementary social and cultural infrastructures, otherwise we cannot benefit from, or sustain, technological innovation. * The MassNet/SmartState initiative aims to prepare Massachussetts for prosperity in the Age of the Network. The initiative will be coordinated through a non-profit with a mission to ensure the state's readiness and leadership in the global village. * MassNet/SmartState will focus on building regional collaboration, alliances, and resources to help Massachusetts organizations, communities, and governments leverage the power of networking to attract investment, jobs, and opportunities. * Organizations and individuals who participate in theMassNet/SmartState project will benefit from the valuable new business, networking, and PR opportunities that will be generated. * The initiative may be modelled on California's "Joint Venture:Silicon Valley Network," and it's initiative, "Smart Valley, Inc." * MassNet/SmartState will address innovations in education, healthcare, management, government, marketing, and collaboration,to catalyze new ventures and initiatives that will benefit the state and its stakeholders. It will also serve as a high-profile model for other states to emulate. * An all day conference and workshop to explore the potential for a MassNet/SmartState effort will be held at the Boston Computer Museum on Monday, November 14, 1994. The conference will belimited to 200 pre- registered participants. Please contact the Networking Institute if you can attend or would like to invite anyone, (617) 965-3340. ... &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& SMART VALLEY WORKSHOP: HEALTH CARE AND THE INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY >From MasonM@svi.org Mon Sep 19 16:20:06 1994 From: Mason Myers You or others within your organization are invited to a workshop on Health Care and the Information Superhighway, sponsored by Smart Valley, Inc., Stanford University's Section on Medical Informatics, and Tandem Computers. ...
