From: Jim Warren Subject: GovAccess.026: ACTION ALERT: Urge governor candidates' digital filings Mar.7, 1994 CALIFORNIA'S ACTING SECY OF STATE HAS AGAIN ASKED FOR COMPUTERIZED FILINGS - On March 4th, Acting Secretary of State Ton Miller (916-445-6371) again requested that the four leading candidates for Governor voluntarily file their required campaign-finance disclosures in computerized form, in addition to the required mountains of paper forms. - Their next filing deadline is March 22nd. - Miller had requested it of candidates shortly before the January filing deadline, but only John Garamendi -- at the time, the "smallest" and least-well-equipped candidate -- honored Miller's request and filed disclosures on diskette. (One 3-1/2" 1.4-megabyte diskette should hold over 500 pages of disclosures; enough for almost any of the single filings in a single filing period.) - The other candidates at the time either said they'd think about it (P. Wilson's staff) or didn't bother to respond at all (K. Brown's staff). - About Garmendi's responsive, modern filing, Miller said, "The public and media response to the availability of Mr. Garamendi's diskette report was very enthusiastic and encouraging. I congratulate him for participating in this voluntary program to facilitate the public's right to know who has contributed to [his] campaign and how the money has been spent." - I've been told that the Sunday [3/6] edition of the Sacramento Bee carried an editorial strongly supporting computerized campaign-finance-disclosure filings. &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& LET 'EM KNOW [BRIEFLY] WE WANT IT AND WE WANT IT *NOW*! :-) - It's worth it for each of us to ask *all* of the candidates to honor Miller's request for computer-format campaign-finance disclosure filings, regardless of which ones we oppose. :-) - It's also worth asking three of 'em for their campaign email addresses. :-) - John Garamendi Campaign, 9000 Sunset Blvd.#400, Los Angeles CA 90069 voice/310-205-5480; fax/916-446-7619 Thank the nice man. Praise for good deeds is as needed as pleas for them. - Pete Wilson Campaign, 1020 12th St. #300, Sacramento CA 95814 voice/916-565-1994; fax/916-552-6474 - Kathleen Brown Campaign, 12233 W. [Any day now, Hayden is expected to amend his Senate Bill 758 to permit and require computerized campaign-finance filings for all campaigns involving nontrivial income or expenses; still worth letting him know you support it.] - And if yer willin', I'd love to nosily know how many folks contact which candidates. A one-liner to jwarren@well.sf.ca.us would bring joy. --jim Jim Warren, columnist for MicroTimes, Government Technology, BoardWatch, etc. 345 Swett Rd., Woodside CA 94062; voice/415-851-7075; fax/415-851-2814 >> To join or drop the GovAccess list, email to jwarren@well.sf.ca.us .<< >> Permission herewith granted for unlimited reposting and recirculation.<<
