HOUSE PANEL MOVES TO CHANGE THE FUNDING SCHEME FOR THE DLP: The House Appropriations Committee voted last week (6/15) to cut in half the legislative appropriation for the Government Printing Office designated for the Depository Library Program (DLP), reduce the appropriation for congressional printing and binding, and eliminate all funding for the Joint Committee on Printing (JCP). The action was described by a Republican congressional staffer as a move to encourage the dissemination of electronic information. The GPO and the nation's library community saw the House action as a threat to the public's access to government information. 2. COMMERCE DECIDES TO PUT THE COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ONLINE: The U.S. Department of Commerce decided last week (6/15) to mount the Commerce Business Daily (CBD) on the Internet under STAT-USA. Cost of subscribing to STAT-USA, which includes National Trade Data Bank (NTDB), Economic, Social and Environmental Database, EBB-lite (the most commonly used files off the Economic Bulletin Board), and GLOBUS is $100 a year ($24.95 for three months). The decision was taken by Gloria Guti‚rrez, Assistant Secretary for Administration. The CBD will be found under GLOBUS (Global Business Opportunity System), which contains government procurement information, both local and international, and information on international trade, World Bank statistics, and other international business opportunities. The web address is: //www.stat-usa.gov 3. GAO PLANS MAJOR EMPHASIS ON INFORMATION POLICY FOR FY 1995-96: For the fiscal year 1995-96, the General Accounting Office (GAO), the congressional watchdog, plans to focus on how to improve the federal government's role as a provider of accesible data. This emphasis on information dissemination is part of the GAO's Federal Management issue area plan which will also include: 1) the integration of management requirements, improvement strategies, and tools into management framework; 2) management reform initiatives; 3) program implementation strategies that can be used to improve efficiency and effectiveness, and 4) federal statistical programs that measure performance. *************************************************************** ARCHIVE: EPIN Summaries are being archived on the Electronic Frontier Foundation system.
