I'm also putting together some other documents / pointers to documents, ftp archives etc. on a gopher server. (see comp.infosystems.gopher FAQ for more information on using gopher). Here is the gopher directory from otax.tky.hut.fi, Topics/Civil-liberties: 1. Alt.drugs FAQ archive at milton.u.washington.edu/ 2. Civil liberties FTP archive at ftp.eff.org/ 3. FTP archive at ftp.eff.org/ 4. Overview 5. Subtopics 6. US Constitution, activism material, pit-manager.mit.edu/ 7. US Government-related docs, Senate fax#, etc., ftp.eff.org/ 8. US Libertarian Party, FIJA, libernet@think.com/ Here's the Overview document: Author: Jyrki Kuoppala (jkp@cs.hut.fi) Last modified: Tue Sep 1 05:37:18 1992 FTP archives: Electronic Frontier Foundation ftp.eff.org /pub Gopher servers: Helsinki University of Techology/Student Body otax.tky.hut.fi, port 70, Topics/Civil-liberties Usenet newsgroups: alt.society.civil-liberty Reports and discussions on civil liberties alt.censorship Talk on censorship alt.privacy,comp.society.privacy(moderated) Privacy issues alt.comp.acad-freedom.news(moderated)/talk News and discussions on academic freedom on electronic media. Carl Kadie posts excellent references on civil liberties issues on these groups, with pointers to electronic versions of the material (Supreme Court decisions, various policies, etc.) available on the net. comp.org.eff.news(moderated)/talk News from the Electronic Frontier Foundation, an organization working for civil liberties on the electronic frontier, and discussions about the electronic frontier. misc.activism.progressive(moderated) Sometimes has reports on civil liberties violations and often news relevant to civil liberties alt.activism/alt.activism.d Sometimes has reports on civil liberties violations and news relevant to civil liberties, but currently mostly appears to be a somewhat less "mainstream" replica of talk.politics.misc. alt.drugs,talk.politics.drugs Apparently because of the "War on Drugs" in USA and hysteria about drugs in many places on the world, alt.drugs and talk.politics.drugs discuss many civil liberties issues soc.culture.usa Despite flames, a dimwit alien non-Usonian posts articles discussing civil liberties to this newsgroup having the bizarre idea that the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave is currently not what it claims, and thus the group has some civil liberties traffic. Well, the topic does pop up often by other posters, too. soc.rights.human Human rights sci.crypt Occasional discussions on the cryptography export restrictions in USA. comp.risks Occasionally has articles connected with civil-liberties. comp.society.cu-digest The Computer Underground Digest, news and articles from the electronic frontier. misc.legal The official legal view of U.S. Constitution is available here, with occasional dissent from people who have bizarre ideas like that the U.S. Constitution is interpreted with common sense by the Supreme Court, that "Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech" means that also laws against publishing sexually explicit material are unconstitional, or that since the alcohol prohibition was passed by a constitutional amendment prohibition on other drugs is unconstitutional because there's no amendment prohibiting them. Here's the "Subtopics" document: Author: Jyrki Kuoppala (jkp@cs.hut.fi) Last modified: Wed Sep 2 01:36:00 1992 War on Drugs Civil forfeiture Academic Freedom PFA Censorship Freedom of religion Bill of Rights Forced evictions FEMA ACLU NORML Finland Kannabisyhdistys Now, these are very sketchy - ideas, material, topics, pointers to FTP and other information sources are welcome. You can post them or mail to me. I think I can easily find lots of the U.S. War on Drugs stuff, so unless it's good summaries etc. I don't think there's much need to discuss that. //Jyrki
