The first-of-its-kind event is being organized by San Francisco-based NetAction and is co-sponsored by several Bay Area non-profit organizations and businesses that provide technology-related services or training. "Volunteers will show off some of their favorite sites on the World Wide Web, and give visitors a quick introduction of the range of information, entertainment, and services available on the Internet," said Audrie Krause, NetAction founder and organizer of the week-long event. NetAction is a new, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting effective use of the Internet for grassroots citizen action, and to educating the public, policymakers, and the media about technology-based social and political issues. Participating organizations include the Berkeley Mac Users Group (BMUG), California Voter Foundation, Digital Queers, Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), Impact Online, the Institute for Global Communication (IGC), and Media Alliance. Volunteers will use Mac and PC computers that are currently on the consumer market, popular Web browser software and regular telephone lines to connect the computers to the Internet via modems. "You don't have to be a computer 'nerd' to take advantage of the vast resources available on the Internet," said Krause. "Whether you're an activist trying to influence Congress, a prospective home buyer, or an amateur astronomer, the information you're looking for is right there at your fingertips." The demonstration will be open to visitors from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, from Monday, September 30 through Saturday, Oct. 5.
